The government of India on 18 May 2010 approved a standardised format to collect demographic and biometric information. It will make easier the enrolment process for the Unique Identification (UID) project. This will help to maintain the uniformity of information data even when the data will be collected by different agencies. It means that different agencies will not collect data in different formats which makes it complicated.  Therefore, a standard format is needed to sort out this problem.

UID project collects basic data related to the person such as name, date of birth, gender, father’s name address, besides ten fingerprints, photograph and iris scan.

The Biometric Standards Committee has already used standards (ISO19794series of standards) and formats while collecting biometric information. Importance of a standard format is increasing because of interoperability between devices and IT systems.
The government also decided to collect data of iris for children in the age group of 5 to 15 years.

The national population Registrar General of India and the other registrars in the UID systems will follow the same standard and process.
