Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta resigned

Since September 2015, he has been facing weeks of intense pressure to quit after going on trial in facing charges of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.

Victor PontaRomania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta on 4 November 2015 resigned from his position following a deadly nightclub blaze which left 32 dead and nearly 200 injured. His resignation came after more than 20000 people rallied in Bucharest to demand he step down.

Since September 2015, he has been facing weeks of intense pressure to quit after going on trial in facing charges of fraud, tax evasion and money laundering. Ponta is mired in a corruption scandal.

Ponta had been Romania's Prime Minister since 2012.

The fire at Colectiv Club broke out as some 400 people gathered for a free rock concert by the band Goodbye to Gravity. The fireworks set off inside the club ignited foam decor.

The club's single exit was overwhelmed in the panic that followed. More than 180 people were injured.
