TikTok Bill passed: Does this mean that TikTok will be banned in the US?

Recently, a bill has been passed by the House of Representatives that asks ByteDance, the owner of TikTok to either sell the social media platform or get the app completely banned in the United States. President Joe Biden signed the bill just a day after the Senate assented to the bill.
Times are not fortunate for TikTok in the United States at present. Last year, the social media application was banned in Montana. However, the courts deemed the prohibition to actually be unconstitutional. Therefore, such a ban actually never went into effect.
Now, the recent bill is different from all such prohibitions. What is the bill all about? Let's understand.

The take of the US to ban TikTok

It was on Wednesday that the bill got passed in the House. There has been a continuous political dispute revolving around the ban on social media platforms. The platform took birth in the year 2017 and soon became a hit. In no time, the social media platform was able to surpass Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat in terms of downloads in the year 2018. In 2020 and 2022, the social media platform reported an increase of 45 percent in the monthly active users.
However, the meteoric surge of the platform disturbed several lawmakers. These lawmakers were of the view that the parent company of TikTok is based in China and thus it could potentially gather sensitive user information. It can also potentially censor content that actually does not align with the Chinese government.

In response, the social media platform TikTok has been clarifying incessantly that it would not disclose any US user information to the government of China. However, the concerns of the lawmakers have been strong

Does the bill talk about banning TikTok?

As per the new bill, a total of 165 days would be given to ByteDance to divest from TikTok. This means that it would actually have to sell TikTok to a company that is not based in China. In case ByteDance fails to do so the app stores such as Google Play and the Apple App Store would actually be barred from hosting the social media platform or offering any web-hosting services to the applications controlled by ByteDance.
The supporters of the bill say that the bill does not impose a ban on the social media platform. Rather, it provides ByteDance with an opportunity to sell the social media platform and avoid TikTok from getting blocked in the United States.

TikTok, on the other hand, argued that it is unsure if China would assent to a sale of the platform or whether it will be successful in selling the platform in the time of six months.
