Mother’s Day is universally celebrated with a lot of love, reverence, and sincerity by all countries alike. What differs is the way and date in which they decide to celebrate it. If we talk about Mexico and the US, both celebrate Mother’s Day, but their ways of celebration differ in approach. The approach of Mexico is rooted in traditions and cultural values, whereas the US represents a more modernized, commercial approach to the special day.
Mexican Mother’s Day Celebration
Mexican Mother’s Day is known as Día de las Madres in Mexican. Mexican culture treats mothers as the “queens of the household,” and their sanctity is fully celebrated on Mother’s Day by letting them rest the whole day or pampering them with their favorite food, drinks, movies, gifts, and much more. Our Lady of Guadalupe is a special and important figure in the Mexican Catholic Church who represents motherhood. Mexican households often visit the church to send their prayers to her on 10th May, Mother’s Day.
For the first time in Texas House history, mariachis rang out from the dais to celebrate Mexican Mother’s Day. Thank you @RepMorales145, @RepRamonRomero, & Speaker @Burrows4TX for honoring culture, community & the power of madres. 🎶 @MariachiATX 🇲🇽 #txlege #DiadelasMadres pic.twitter.com/wawAromfqS

Mexican Vs US Mother's Day
Let’s look at some of the major ways in which the celebration of Mother’s Day differs between the two countries.
1. Date of Celebration
In Mexico the date to celebrate Mother’s Day is fixed to be 10th May every year with no change or exceptions. The US agrees to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, but no specific date is fixed; it changes every year. For 2025, Mother’s Day in the US is on May 11, 2025.
2. Cultural Importance
Mexico’s celebration of Mother’s Day is rooted in traditional communal celebration. It is not a matter of whether one chooses to celebrate it, Mexicans treat Mother’s Day as a mandatory traditional event that must be prioritized.
The concept of Mother’s Day is rather commercial and modernized when compared with the Mother’s Day celebration in Mexico. People do not treat it as a mandatory or priority day above everything, unlike Mexicans.
3. Community Involvement
Mexicans celebrate Mother’s Day in a collective way where everyone comes together to serenade mothers. The traditional Mexican birthday song called "Las Mañanitas" is sung dedicated to mothers on this day. Schools organize cultural events that include performances dedicated to mothers. Families celebrate this day with parties, including gifting mothers with flowers or gifts.
The approach of the US towards Mother’s Day is quite individualistic. It is the choice of the people whether they want to give something to their mothers or make the day special in any way. The US does not treat the day as an official celebration in ways that affect a normal routine or work in any way. Many people might even choose to not celebrate Mother’s Day or forget about it altogether since it is not that important to them as it is to Mexicans, rooted in traditions.
