Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, became the first American pope on May 8, 2025. A former missionary in Peru and leader of the Augustinian Order, he holds degrees in theology and canon law from top institutions, including Villanova and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He is known for his humility, leadership, and commitment to reform. He served key roles under Pope Francis. He was the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. His papacy continues a focus on inclusivity, justice, and modernization within the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on May 8th, 2025. He took the name Pope Leo XIV. This is a historic milestone as he becomes the first American-born pope. He is also the first member of the Augustinian Order to ascend to the papacy. 

Pope Leo XIV faced the public for his first speech as the Pope and emphasized themes of peace, inclusion, and environmental benefits. He pledged to continue the reforms initiated by Pope Francis, focusing on synodality and the inclusion of marginalized communities within the Church. 

Robert Francis Prevost Education

He was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. Robert Francis Prevost is the son of a French father and an Italian mother. He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Villanova University, graduating in 1977. 

After his undergraduate studies, he joined the Order of Saint Augustine, taking his first vows in 1978 and solemn vows in 1981. 

He earned a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He later obtained both licentiate and doctorate degrees in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. 

Career

The commitment of Robert Francis’s missionary work led him to Peru in 1985. This is where he served in various capacities, including parish pastor, seminary teacher, and diocesan official. His dedication to the Augustinian community helped in his election as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, a position he held from 2001 to 2013.

After the demise of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, Prevost was elected pope by the College of Cardinals. Choosing the name Leo XIV, he signaled a commitment to social justice and continuity with his predecessors, particularly Pope Leo XIII and Pope Francis. Leo XIV is expected to bring a unique blend of pastoral care and administrative experience to the papacy. From his early days in Chicago to missionary work in Peru and leadership roles in the Vatican, his journey reflects a life rooted in humility, justice, and faith.

Honours 

Throughout his career, Pope Leo XIV has been recognized for his service and leadership. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis in 2023 and has held significant positions within the Church's hierarchy. 

His contributions to the Church, particularly in Latin America, have been acknowledged through various appointments and responsibilities, reflecting his dedication to pastoral care and ecclesiastical governance.
