What is the Bill Passed by the House Requiring Voters to Prove Citizenship in Federal Elections?

Recently on Wednesday, the House of representatives assented to a new bill. The bill intends to make sure hat only the American citizens vote in the federal elections in the United States.

Following a deliberation over the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on the House floor, it got championed by House speaker Mike Johnson, Rep. Chip Roy, R-La.  and R-Texas. Finally, it got approved through a vote of 221-198.

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (District of Texas), Rep. Henry Cuellar (District of Texas), Rep. Jared Golden (District of Maine), Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (District of Washington) Rep. Don Davis (District of North Carolina), are the five Democrats who voted in favor of the bill.

Now, the bill will be headed to the Senate. One can expect a strong opposition from the Democrats there. What does the President think about the bill? Well, Mr. Biden said that he will be vetoing the bill.

A bit more about the bill

It was Roy who introduced the bill. Former President Trump pushed the legislation in a press conference held at Mar-a-Lago this year.

Ahead of the recess for July Fourth that continued for a week, Johnson distributed a memo within the House GOP conference, in order to justify the need of the bill.

The man did not stop and continued posting about the same on platform X.

"The SAVE Act will safeguard our elections by ensuring only American citizens vote in federal elections," expressed the House speaker. He then posted a series of posts that described what the legislation does.

As per Johnson, the bill demands the state election officials to enquire regarding the citizenship prior to providing voter registration forms to the applicants. The bill also demands an individual to provide a citizenship proof before registering to vote in the federal elections. The bill enables the state officials to accept multiple documents, and this makes it simpler for the citizens to register to vote. Furthermore, it also provides the states with access to a federal agency database. This gives them the power to remove noncitizens from the voter rolls. This will also help them confirm the citizenship for the ones who lack the evidence.

Johnson further expressed that the measure will be directing the Department of Homeland Security to decide whether to start the removal proceedings of the noncitizens who are registered to vote.
