As time passes by, more and more people are urging US President Joe Biden to step aside from the position of the Democratic Party candidate. They criticize the not-so-good performance of the President in the presidential debate against ex-President Donald Trump.
The poor presentation of Biden during the June 27 debate has led to concerns, doubts, and questions regarding his ability to lead for the coming four years. Many believe that at the time of the debate, Biden seemed to find it difficult to stay focused. At several moments during the debate, Biden looked confused or exhausted.
Since then, a damage control campaign has begun. Biden and his supporters are trying to assert that he is a fit match for the country and that he would not be stepping aside.
However, a few people in the Democratic party are not in support. Thus, there seems to be a list of representatives that call for a drop-out of Biden gaining light.
The debate and its impact on Biden
Presidential debates have played an important role in the elections in the United States ever since 1960 when it aired for the very first time. Since then, debates have been instrumental in shifting the voters' choice towards the better speaker. Debates thus give the candidates a good chance to win the support of the voters.
The debate performance of Biden, however, strengthened the doubts relating to his abilities. This further puts his capacity to win the upcoming presidential elections in November. There has been immense dissatisfaction surrounding how Biden's government catered to the issues of the Gaza war, immigration on the borders, and inflation.
A poll showcased that post the presidential debate, voters lost their confidence in the mental fitness of Biden from about 28 percent to 20 percent.
The Democrats that could replace Biden
There are five members of the US House of Representatives within the Democratic Party that have called for President Biden to step aside.
The names are Representatives Lloyd Doggett, Seth Moulton, Raul Grijalva, Angie Craig, and Mike Quigley.
On Sunday, at a virtual meeting called by Representative Hakeem Jeffries, a distinct group of Democrats talked about the ways to urge Biden to step aside, as per reports.
After the recent debate, the preferences of voters have shifted towards Trump by 3.5 points on average. Before the debate took place, Trump was actually ahead of Biden by 1.5 points on average.
Analysts are of the firm view that even tiny shifts are important and can prove to be a game-changer for the upcoming elections in November. They believe that such shifts happen in countries like the United States that is strongly polarized around distinct political ideologies.
