Common Law admission test is a centralized test for admission to reputed national law universities in India. The test is usually taken after the higher secondary examination or 12th grade for admission to integrate under graduation programs in Law and after graduation in Law for Maters of Law (LLM) programs that are conducted by these universities. This test for admission in such universities was for the first time conducted on 11th May 2008 by NLSIU –Bangalore. The results for the same were announced on May 19, 2008. The test is for two hour duration and it comprises of objective type covering questions on English, General Knowledge, basic Mathematics, and logical reasoning. The second CLAT examination for the academic year 2009-10 was held on 17th May 2009 by Nalsar-Hydrabad and subsequently preceding NLU’s according to the establishment. In the present scenario, CLAT has become one of the most competitive admission tests in India with an acceptance rate of only 2 per cent under general merit.
It was before the introduction of CLAT, the autonomous law schools in India conducted their own separate entrance tests which enabled the people to prepare and appear separately for each of these tests. The schedule of these entrances some- times clashed with several institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology joint entrance examination and the All India pre-medical test. This caused students to miss the test and experience much stress. In all there are fifteen national law universities in India, first of which is National Law school of India University which started its first batch in the year 1987. Out of these fifteen universities, the National Law University, Delhi conducts its own separate entrance test which is known as All India Law entrance test.
Another significant aspect of these entrance examinations is its eligibility criteria. Only Indian nationals and NRI’s can appear for these entrance tests. For under-graduate courses students must have passed 10+2 from a recognized board or university with not less than 45 % marks in aggregate and 40 % for the reserved category. And for post graduate courses LLB/B.L degree or equivalent degree from recognized University with not less than 55% marks for the general category and 50 % for the reserved one. The candidates who have also passed the qualifying degree examination through supplementary/compartment and repeat attempts are also eligible for appearing in these entrance tests and taking admission in any such universities.
