Born in 1968, Ladda Tammy Duckworth is a retired Army National Guard lieutenant colonel and an American politician, serving as the junior United States senator since 2017. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She was the face of Illinois's 8th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.
Tammy Duckworth was educated at the University of Hawaii, Manoa and the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
The lady served as a United States Army helicopter pilot. In the year 2004, she lost both her legs and mobility in the right arm in an attack by a rocket-propelled grenade to her Black Hawk helicopter. Tammy Duckworth was the very first female double amputee from the war.
She got injured, but was awarded a medical waiver to serve in the Illinois Army National Guard for the next ten years until she retired as a lieutenant colonel in the year 2014.
In the year 2012, she got elected to the United States House of Representatives. There, she served two terms. she was elected to the United States Seate in the year 2016, ad defeated Republican incumbant Mark Kirk.
Duckworth was born to an American development-aid worker and a Thai woman. She was the very first Thai American woman to get elected to the Congress. This also made her the very first person born in Thailand to be elected to Congress. Moreover, this also made her the first woman with a disability elected to Congress, the very first female double amputee in the Senate. She is also the very first senator to give birth while in the office. Tammy Duckworth is also the second Asian American woman to serve in the Senate. The first one is Mazie Hirono.
Tammy Duckworth's early Life and education
The lady was born in Bangkok, Thailand. Her father, Franklin Duckworth was a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. He passed away in 2005. He traced the roots of the family to the American Revolution.
Her 6th-great grandfather is Henry Coe. He owned four slaves of the freedom clauses of 1827 will.
Her mother, Lamai Sompornpairin, is a Thai Chinese. She is originally from Chiang Mai.
Duckworth went to the Singapore American School, the International School Bangkok, and the Jakarta International School.
She went to the University of Hawaii, and then opted for a master's defree at George Washington University in international affairs. There, she joined the Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC).
It was at this time that Duckworth found her future husband, Bryan Bowlsbey.
Later, they had two daughters. The youngest one was born in 2018. She gave birth to her while in office, being the very first senator to do so.
Eventually, Duckworth became a member of the Ntaional Guard. She trained a helicopter pilot. Additionally, she was called to active duty in Iraq in the year 2004 while she was working on a doctorate. Her helicopter, however, was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade. In the accident, she unfortunately lost both her legs. She also got her right arm injured badly.
In the year 2006, she ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat. There, she served as the director of the state of the Department of Veterans' Affairs. After Barack Obama became the president, she became assisatnt secretary for intergovernmental and public affairs at the United StatesDepartment of Veterans Affairs. Then, she resigned to run for the House of Representatives from the 8th congressional district of Illinois.
