An MoU has been signed between the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) to make textbooks and other educational material available for deaf children in Sign language. The MoU was signed virtually in the presence of Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot.
The Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre is an autonomous institute of the social justice and empowerment ministry which works towards developing manpower for popularising the use of Indian Sign Language, teaching, and conducting research in the domain.
Textbook to ensure accessible study materials for students
The Union Minister while speaking about the Memorandum of Understanding signed stated that the availability of the NCERT textbooks in the Indian Sign Language will ensure that the deaf students will be able to access educational resources and also be useful and needed for teachers, teacher educators, parents and the hearing impaired community in general.
Appropriate educational material required for better education
According to officials from the ministry, the skills of the students are developed in childhood itself and it is necessary to provide them with the appropriate educational material as per their learning requirements. Until now hearing-impaired children studied through the verbal or written medium. With the MoU signed the children will now be able to study through a single Indian Sign Language which will in turn enhance their vocabulary and capabilities to understand concepts.
