Geographically speaking, Delaware occupies a distinctive position in the Mid-Atlantic and South Atlantic regions. Therefore, it borders Maryland to the south and west, Pennsylvania to the north, and both New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It also forms the northeastern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula. 

The state itself is split into just three counties—New Castle (up north), Kent (in the middle), and Sussex (down south). Each of these counties shows off a bit of a different landscape, which is pretty neat. While the very top part of Delaware brushes against the rolling hills of the Piedmont Plateau, most of the state is flat, sandy Atlantic Coastal Plain. The average elevation here is only about 60 feet above sea level, making it one of the lowest-lying states in the country. This one-of-a-kind geography, along with the really important Delaware River and Bay, truly shapes its varied scenery.

What does the Delaware Flag Symbolise?

The Delaware flag, which became official on July 24, 1913, tells a strong visual story about what the state is all about. It has got a colonial blue background with a buff-colored diamond right in the middle. Inside that diamond, you will find the state's coat of arms, which was approved way back in 1777.

This detailed design features a shield showing a sheaf of wheat, an ear of corn, and an ox—all symbols of Delaware's farming roots. Above the shield, a ship reminds us of the state's coastal trade. On either side, a farmer and a militiaman stand as supporters, representing the balance between everyday life and protecting the state. Below the diamond, the date December 7, 1787, is written. It marks Delaware's important role as the very first state to approve the U.S. Constitution. Finally, the state motto, "Liberty and Independence," wraps up this meaningful symbol, truly showing the values Delawareans hold dear.
