The International Yoga Day has been observed by hundreds of yoga followers at an event. What made this event of great significance is the fact that it was addressed by the Deputy Ambassador of India to the US Sripriya Ranganathan.
The event took a start on Wednesday in the Indian style, with Indian classical dance performances and prayers. Various enthusiasts took part in the event and underscored the essence of harmony and oneness inspired by yoga.
Ranganathan expressed at the event that the ancient Indian practice paves the way for balance and harmony for an illuminating future of the society.
She further iterated that the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, acknowledging the worldwide appeal of yoga.
There were several elements that encouraged the introduction of millet into the lifestyle at the event. Additionally, the event also encouraged the use of eco-friendly goods in everyday life. All in all, the event highlighted the importance of a yogic lifestyle.
International Yoga Day 2024- Yoga for Self and Society
This year's International Yoga Day comes with a different theme. The theme this year is "Yoga for Self and Society". It underscores the relation of yoga and self, and how the ancient practice can be fruitful for society as a whole.

The inception of the idea- the history of the International Yoga Day
It was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who proposed to the United Nations General Assembly, the idea to adopt an International Day of Yoga in September 2014. The purpose was to celebrate the invaluable ancient Indian practice.
The Indian Prime Minister expressed at the UN General Assembly speech, the importance of yoga, calling it an embodiment of the unity of body and the mind, restraint, and fulfillment, and thought and action. He underscored the harmony maintained by yoga between man and nature. He accentuated the importance of a holistic approach to health and well-being, at the UN General Assembly speech.
The impactful speech of the Indian PM led to the passing of a draft resolution that proposed declaring June 21 as the day for celebrating the yoga practice. After the draft received huge support from a total of 177 member States, it was adopted in 2014.

The day of June 21 was chosen as the International Day of Yoga as the PM of India, Narendra Modi expressed that the date belongs to the longest day of the year, is celebrated in various cultures, and holds a special relevance in various parts of the globe.
