What exactly is the spring (vernal) equinox?

The term equinox has its derivation from two Latin terms which mean equal and night respectively. This is because during equinox, the night and the day actually last approximately the same amount of time. However, even in a situation like this, one may get some extra minutes.

The planet revolves around the sun at a specific angle. For a majority of this year, the axis of the Earth is tilted either toward the sun or away from the sun. This implies that the northern and southern hemispheres actually get unequal amounts of sunrise, other than the time of the equinox.

At the time of the equinox, the axis of the Earth and its orbit actually line up. During the equinox, both the hemispheres actually get approximately equal amounts of sunlight.

The spring temperature outlook is inclined towards above-average temperatures across the northern United States. Through the end of May, the New England and the Pacific Northwest hold the highest chances of experiencing above-average warmth.

In the southern United States, there exist equal chances of experiencing either below-average or above-average temperatures.

The shift to El Niño Southern Oscillation leads to the expectation of neutral conditions by the climax of spring or the early summer. It is expected that the La Niña conditions will be developing in the time of early fall or in the summer of the year 2024.
