Her father used to run a road-construction company, and has completed her schooling at St. Teresa’s Academy. Later, she started studying journalism at Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority with the dream of becoming a television actor. She also used to do a part-time job at a men’s clothing store in Phoenix, which ultimately introduced her to her husband and business partner, Andy Spade.

Kate Spade Career

In 1986, Kate and her husband Andy moved to Manhattan, where she started working in the accessories department of Mademoiselle magazine, and she climbed to the position of Senior Fashion Editor in 1991. As she was working closely with the fashion world, she noticed a gap that stylish yet practical handbags were hard to find. This realization laid the foundation of her brand, Kate Spade.

In 1993, Kate and Andy co-founded Kate Spade New York. With handmade prototypes and a bold vision, Kate created handbags that were modern, chic, and affordable. Her breakthrough moment came when Barneys placed an order, prompting her to add external brand labels to the bags, an iconic move that boosted visibility.

How Kate Spade Bade Gained Recognition?

Kate Spade New York quickly evolved beyond handbags. The brand expanded into clothing, shoes, jewellery, eyewear, stationery, home décor, and even some baby items. The first store was opened in SoHo in 1996, followed by many international locations, including Japan.

Sub-brands like Kate Spade Saturday and Jack Spade were also made for casual wear and men's accessories. However, all these stores closed in 2015.

In 2016, Kate made a stylish return with a new label, Frances Valentine, focusing on luxury footwear and handbags. Named after family members, this brand reflected a fresh start. She even legally changed her name to Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade to support the brand's identity.

How Kate Spade Died

Kate married Andy Spade in 1994, and they also had one daughter, named Frances Beatrice. Though not separated, the couple had been living apart before her tragic death, and on June 5, 2018, Kate was found dead in her New York apartment. The cause was suicide by hanging, and later her family confirmed she had been battling with depression and anxiety for a long time.

Achievements 

Kate Spade was honoured by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1996 & 1998. She also won multiple design awards for her home collection and was inducted into the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in 2017.
