Nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Banerjee will be conferred with the ‘Atul Chandra Gupta Distinguished Alumnus Award’ by the Alumni Association of Presidency College. Alumni Association Secretary Bivas Chaudhuri on Thursday said that the award will be conferred to him in January next year when he will be attending the felicitation programme of the association.
Members of the association met professor Banerjee at his residents on Wednesday during his visit to the city to hand over the letter signed by the President of the Alumni Association Nabaneeta Dev Sec requesting him to attend the felicitation programme.
Mr. Chaudhuri who spoke to the media said that Professor Banerjee has agreed o attend the felicitation programme organized by the alumni association.
The Presidency Alumni Association wanted to initially organize the programme on January 20, 2020, during the founder’s day celebration of the institution. However, the exact date of the ceremony will be decided based on the schedule of Professor Banerjee and his availability.
The ‘Atul Chandra Gupta Distinguished Alumnus Award’ has earlier been conferred to poet Sankha Ghosh and Professor Emeritus at Jadavpur University- Sukanta Chaudhri.
Mr. Choudhry also said that the alumni association will also be inviting all the professors who had taught them in the 1981 batch at Presidency along with the non-teaching staff members who were associated with the institution when Banerjee was a student here to make the occasion more memorable.
Professor Banerjee is also expected to speak at the one-day ceremony along with an informal adda session
Professor Banerjee was conferred with the Nobel Prize for his work in Economics. He jointly won the prize with his French American wife Ester Duflo and Michael Kremer of Harvard University for ‘the experimental approach to alleviating global poverty’. He is also a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
