The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is a voice for the nursing community, including aspiring nurses looking forward to establishing their career, along with nurses who have been contributing their services to the community for years. This association celebrates Nurses Week in all its glory by conducting events throughout the week and facilitating the nurse community with rewards and recognition. They commemorate the value of the nursing workforce by celebrating National Nurses Week.

When is National Nurses Week Celebrated?

National Nurses Week is celebrated from 6th May 2025 to 12th May 2025. It is a time to celebrate the labour and hard work of the nurses who provide their service around the clock daily to heal the community's humans. National Nurses Day is officially celebrated on 6th May 2025. Meanwhile, 12th May is the day when the legend Florence Nightingale was born. She is the founder of modern nursing, who worked relentlessly to establish new forms of technology and healthcare.

This day is celebrated by not just the community of healthcare professionals and nurses but also common people who try to give back some due credit to the nurses by acknowledging their existence and contribution to the workforce. Top organisations are celebrating National Nurses Day in full swing.

Theme of National Nurses Week 2025

The International Council for Nurses has selected “Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economy” as the official theme for National Nurses Week 2025. This theme is closely tied to the idea of paying attention to the health of nurses, not just in terms of physical well-being, equal wages, but also safeguarding their mental well-being.

In recent years, the focus on the mental pressure on nurses has been acknowledged, along with looking for ways to combat it. In the workplace, if nurses are given proper facilities and benefits, then the well-being of the citizens will be ensured automatically. This will, in turn, improve the economy of the country automatically. Thus, this year's theme aims to focus on the improvement of the well-being of the nursing community to achieve better financial well-being for the country.

History of National Nurses Week 2025

  • It was Dorothy Sutherland who first introduced the idea of celebrating National Nurses Day in honour of this noble profession. She belonged to the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, but her idea was never validated officially at the time.
  • To mark the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale in 1954, when she helped troops in the Crimean War, October was chosen as the month to celebrate National Nurses Day. It was never made official despite all the buzz around it.
  • It was finally in the year 1990 when the concept of a week-long celebration of nurses came into existence. It was not until 1993 that official recognition of National Nurses Day was passed. Since then, nurses are celebrated every year around the world for their contributions to the healthcare system as a rigid backbone.
