In recent months, the United States has set its sights on an ambitious national defense project that could completely change how the country protects itself from enemy attacks. At the center of this plan is a futuristic idea: one that involves the skies above, cutting-edge technology, and a mission to create something never seen before.
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth explained that the Golden Dome system will work with our current defenses on the ground. Its main goal is to protect our country from all sorts of airborne threats. This includes cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, and drones, whether they carry regular explosives or nuclear weapons.

What Is Golden Dome Missile Defence System?
The “Golden Dome” is a new missile defense initiative recently proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Unlike traditional defense systems that focus on land or sea, this one sets its foundation in space. Trump described it as a shield over the entire country, designed to detect and destroy any missile threat before it even gets close to American soil.
Inspired by Israel's Iron Dome system, which intercepts short-range rockets, the Golden Dome concept represents a significantly more complex undertaking. It aims to safeguard the U.S. against long-range missiles and nuclear threats by integrating ground-based systems with space-based technology. The strategic objective is to neutralize incoming threats at various stages of their trajectory, from initial launch to terminal approach.
Budget of the Golden Dome
Big projects often come with big price tags, and this new defense system is no exception. Some experts, like those at the Congressional Budget Office, believe it could end up costing more than $500 billion. That's a huge amount of money!
However, the initial plan laid out by Trump is quite a bit less. He has announced $25 billion to get the project off the ground. He estimates that the total cost, in the long run, would be closer to $175 billion. It is safe to say that the difference between the highest estimates and what is currently being discussed for funding is quite large. It goes to show that figuring out the true cost of these massive projects can be a real challenge.
Opposition Countries
Russia and China recently spoke out against the idea of the "Golden Dome." These countries are sceptical about this prospect, worrying about their own safety. They said this kind of system is "deeply destabilizing," meaning it could make things much more dangerous in the world. Their big concern is that it might turn space into a "battlefield" where countries fight.
After their discussions, Russia's government released a statement saying that this "Golden Dome" idea "explicitly provides for a significant strengthening of the arsenal for conducting combat operations in space." Basically, they believe it's a plan to put a lot more weapons in space, which they see as a serious threat.
