Mar 6, 2013 17:15 IST

UPSC made significant changes in the syllabus as well as pattern of the Main Exam. These changes will be applicable for IAS Main Exam-2013.

Candidates appearing for the IAS 2013 need to note about the changes in the scheme of civil services (main) examination. Certain changes have been incorporated in the Main examination of the IAS 2013. The Civil Services Examination comprises of Preliminary Examination and Main Examination.

While the Prelim examination has remained unaltered, there are certain changes in the Main examination. To help student prepare for IAS Preliminary Exam-2013, Jagranjosh has come out with PDF Books Package and Online Test Series.

Also, it is very important to note that certain changes have been implemented in respect to the choice of language medium in the Main examination.

Changes in the Scheme and subjects for Main Examinations
The Main examination will comprise of seven papers in all. In the new format, UPSC removed one of the optional subjects. Now, the students will have to appear for just one optional subject with two papers of 250 marks each. Apart from this, Paper-1 will contain two sections. Section-I will have an essay of 200 marks while Section-II will have English Comprehension and Précis of 100 marks. Besides, the General Studies will now have 4 papers of 250 marks each.

What is most important to note is the fact that Paper IV on General Studies has been introduced and this will include Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude for the very first time. One of the important changes is regarding the selection of literature subjects as optional. In the changed pattern only those students who have done their graduation in the particular language could opt the Literature of that language as their optional.

Syllabi of the papers included in the scheme of Civil Services (Main) Examination are given as follows:-

PAPER-I: Section 1 Essay-200 Marks
Section 2 English Comprehension & English Précis-100 Marks

PAPER-II: General Studies- I: Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society-250 Marks

PAPER-III: General Studies- II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations-250 Marks

PAPER-IV: General Studies-III: Technology, Economic Development, Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management-250 marks

PAPER-V: General Studies- IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude-250 Marks

PAPER-VI & PAPER VII: Optional Subject Papers I & II-250 Marks Each

Personality Test- 275 Marks

The weightage of marks of the interview has been kept at the same standard of 13% i.e.
• Earlier Interview Carried: 300/2300*100=13 percent approx
• Now, 275/2075*100=13 percent approx

Similarly the weightage of the Optional Paper had been reduced from 52 percent to 24 percent, i.e.
• Earlier it was 1200/2300*100=52%approx
• Now, it is 500/2075*100=24%approx

In case of the General Studies Paper the Weightage of Marks has increased to 48 percent from 26 percent, i.e.
• Earlier it was 600/2300*100=26%;
