Students from Assam have filed a petition in the supreme court seeking the cancellation of the Assam High School Leaving Certification examinations (class 10) and the Higher Secondary (Class 12) examinations. The petition was filed by a group of students stating that they are being compelled to appear for the Assam Class 10 and 12 examinations amidst the COVID-19 situation in the state. The petition stated that considering the safety of the students and the parents it is better to cancel the examinations.
The state government of Assam had announced that the Class 10 and 12 exams will be conducted only if the COVID-19 positivity rate of the COVID-19 class drops below 2 percent in the state. The boards conducting the Assam Class 10 and 12 exams will try to conduct the exams in mid-July.
According to the Assam chief minister, the Assam board class 10 and 12 exams will be conducted between July 15 and 20, 2021 for two or three papers. The male and female students will be writing the exams on separate dates to maintain social distancing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement made by the CM however caused panic among the students and parents.
Exams in mid-July
The petition filed further points that the statement by the government regarding the COVID-19 positivity rate going below 2 percent has no relevance. The positivity rate must be below 2 percent by July 1, 2021, for the exams to be conducted by July 15, 2021. The students have however been asked to continue with the preparations for the board exams.
Decision to conduct exams after consultation
Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu earlier announced that the class 10 board exams have been scheduled to be conducted after consulting discussions on the issue with the related stakeholders.
The minister while speaking to the media stated that the exams will be conducted with a reduced number of subjects and reduced marks if necessary. The trends of COVID-19 cases are being observed and the state may get a time window when COVID is at its lowest to complete the examinations.
