India is a nation of dreamers. Whether it was mathematicians who marked the course of the stars many centuries ago, or the inventors of rockets who built so much with such little resources, the country has always been ahead in innovation.

But have you ever asked yourself how India made its first mark in the universe beyond the earth? Every big story has a point of departure and in the context of the Indian space saga, that point has a very important name. Here we will find out which was the first satellite of India.

Which Was the First Satellite of India?

On 19 April 1975, Aryabhata, the first Indian satellite was launched. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) built it entirely and launched it into space with the help of a Kosmos-3M rocket at the Kapustin Yar launch site in Russia. This saw India officially join the space age and one of the few developing nations that achieved this feat

The satellite was named after Aryabhata who was one of the greatest Indian mathematicians and astronomers who lived in the 5th century AD and made important contributions in the field of science and mathematics.

The ISRO mentions: “The Aryabhata spacecraft, named after the famous Indian astronomer, was India's first satellite; it was completely designed and fabricated in India and launched by a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket from Kapustin Yar on April 19, 1975.”

What Was the Purpose of Aryabhata?

Aryabhata was an experimental satellite with three scientific objectives:

  • Conducting X-ray astronomy experiments.

  • Research into the solar neutrons and the gamma rays.

  • Researching about the upper most layer of the atmosphere of the earth which is known as the ionosphere.

The mission was regarded as a tremendous success despite the fact that some of the instruments stopped working due to power failure. It also gave the Indian scientists hands-on experience in satellite building/construction, launching, and operation, which no textbook could have ever taught them.

The NASA HEASARC mentions: “Aryabhata was built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics, and solar physics.”

Key Facts About Aryabhata Satellite

  • It was launched on 19 April 1975

  • It was built by ISRO and put into orbit using a Soviet Kosmos-3M launch.

  • Weighed around 360 kilograms

  • Orbited at an altitude of approximately 600 kilometres

  • Orbited Earth for over 17 years

  • Re-entered Earth's atmosphere and burned up on 11 February 1992

How Did Aryabhata Change India's Space Journey?

The Aryabhata satellite was a statement. It informed the world that despite the fact that India was a young and developing nation, they had scientific genius and will to reach the stars. The knowledge that came from this mission became the building blocks for the nation.

Starting with Aryabhata in 1975, ISRO has gone on to launch the first remote sensing satellite in India, the first Indian communication satellite and subsequent missions to the moon and Mars like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan respectively. In 2023, India made history with Chandrayaan-3, which became the first mission to make a landing close to the South pole of the Moon which was a very big achievement.

But none of it would have been possible without that first satellite, which launched in 1975.

Aryabhata is remembered not just as a piece of space technology, but as a symbol of Indian ambition, courage, and scientific ideas. It was like a reminder to a young country that the sky is not the limit but just the beginning.
