Vishwakarma Puja 2026 School Holiday: Students in many states may get an extended break around Vishwakarma Puja this week as the festival falls close to the weekend. Vishwakarma Puja will be observed on September 18, 2026, in West Bengal, where the state government has revised the holiday date from September 17 to September 18. With September 19 and 20 falling on Saturday and Sunday, students in institutions observing the holiday could get a longer break.

However, the holiday schedule is not uniform all over India. Whether schools and colleges will remain closed on September 17 or September 18 depends on the respective state government's holiday notification and the academic calendar of individual institutions. Students and parents should therefore check the latest notice issued by their school, college or state education department before assuming a four-day holiday.

Vishwakarma Puja 2026 Holiday: What Students Need to Know

Vishwakarma Puja is an important festival dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, regarded in Hindu tradition as the divine architect and craftsman. The festival is particularly significant among workers, artisans, engineers, industrial establishments, factories and businesses where tools, machinery and equipment are worshipped.

In 2026, the festival falls close to the weekend, creating the possibility of an extended break for students in states and institutions that declare a holiday around the occasion.

West Bengal Schools, Colleges Holiday on September 18

West Bengal has made a significant change to its Vishwakarma Puja holiday schedule. The state government had earlier declared September 17 as a holiday. However, according to the revised notice, the holiday has been declared on September 18, 2026, as the Vishwakarma Puja observance falls on that day.

The revised notification states that state government offices, local bodies, statutory bodies, boards, corporations and educational institutions under the West Bengal government will remain closed on September 18. 

Will Schools Be Closed on September 17, 18, 19 and 20?

A four-day school holiday from September 17 to 20 cannot be treated as a nationwide holiday. The holiday arrangement will differ depending on the state and the institution.

Vishwakarma Puja 2026: Which States Observe the Festival?

Vishwakarma Puja is widely observed in several eastern and northern parts of India, particularly in states including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Assam. However, observing the festival does not automatically mean that every school or college in these states will remain closed.

September 2026 School Holidays

September has already seen many festivals and regional holidays in different parts of India. The Vishwakarma Puja holiday adds another possible break for students in states where the festival is included in the official academic calendar.

However, students should not assume that a holiday declared for government offices automatically applies to every private educational institution. The final decision on school and college closures may depend on the relevant education department and institutional calendar.
