National Testing Agency (NTA) is an autonomous and self sustained testing organisation which conducts entrance examinations for admission/fellowship in higher education educational institutions. The examinations conducted by NTA are UGC NET, CUET, JEE (Main), NEET – UG, CMAT, GPAT, etc. It was established in November 2017 to conduct entrance examination admissions and recruitment.
NTA was established with the aim to conduct transparent, efficient and international tests to assess candidates competency for admission and recruitment purposes. A team of best subject matter experts, psychometricians and IT delivery and security professionals ensures that the current gaps in existing assessment systems are properly identified and bridged.

What are NTA Functions?
NTA functions include identifying partner institutions with adequate infrastructure for onlines exams, creating the comprehensive question banks, establishing R&D centres, providing quality testing services, etc. Check the list below for functions which are to be done by NTA.
- To identify partner institutions with adequate infrastructure from the existing schools and higher education institutions which would facilitate conduct of online examinations without adversely impacting their academic routine.
- To create a question bank for all subjects using the modern techniques
- To establish a strong R&D culture as well as a pool of experts in different aspects of testing
- To help individual colleges and universities in the field of testing and to provide training and advisory services to the institutions in India. To provide quality testing services to the academic institutions in India.
- To develop a state of the art culture of testing in India by using domestic and international expertise. To collaborate with international organisations like ETS to achieve the same.
- To undertake any other examination that is entrusted to it by the Ministries/Departments of Government of India/State Governments.
- To undertake the reforms and training of school boards as well as other bodies where the testing standards should be comparable with the entrance examinations.

What are Exams Conducted by NTA?
The NTA conducts major examinations, like UGC NET, CUET, JEE (Main), NEET – UG, CMAT, GPAT, etc. NTA conducted the National Eligibility Test (NET) exam on behalf of UGC, which conducted for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor Both in Indian Universities and Colleges. From Dec 2018 onwards, the UGC- NET (for Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both), is being conducted by the NTA. The award of JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both OR Eligibility for Assistant Professor only depends on the performance of the candidate in both the papers of NET in aggregate. However, the candidates qualifying exclusively for Assistant Professor will not be considered for the JRF.
Why is NTA in the News?
NTA is in the news because the UGC NET conducted by NTA on June 18, 2024 got cancelled due to the integrity of the examination being compromised. The Ministry of Education wrote on social media platform X (Twitter) that, “The Government is committed to ensure the sanctity of examinations and protect the interest of students. The Ministry of Education has decided that the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination be cancelled on the basis of inputs from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, prima facie indicating that the integrity of the examination may have been compromised.”

Currently the NTA is headed by former chairman of Prof. (Retd.) Pradeep Kumar Joshi, the NTA team includes Shri Subodh Kumar Singh, IAS Director General (NTA) and the three directors of IITs, two directors of NITs, two directors of IIMs, Director, IISER Pune, Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Vice Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Chairman, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and Dr. Harish Shetty, M.D. (Psychiatry), Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital.
