Dominica has honoured Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its highest award for his efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and his commitment to strengthening ties between India and Dominica.
PM Modi is currently in the last leg of his visit to three Caribbean nations. During this trip PM Modi created history by becoming the first Indian PM to visit Guyana.
PM Modi Awarded in Dominica
President of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton, presented Prime Minister Modi with the esteemed "Dominica Award of Honour" on November 20th during the India-Caricom Summit in Dominica.
Following his acceptance of Dominica's highest national honour, Prime Minister Modi thanked the country and said it was not only for him but also for India's 1.4 billion people, their customs, and their ideals. He added, "We are two democracies, and both of our nations are role models for women's empowerment across the world."
Top Honours from Guyana and Barbados
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be honoured by Guyana and Barbados, taking his total international awards to 19. Guyana will present him with its highest national award, The Order of Excellence, while Barbados will grant him the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados.
Earlier, Nigeria also honoured PM Modi with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). He is only the second foreign leader to receive this award, after Queen Elizabeth, who was honored in 1969.
PM Modi’s Help to Caribbean Countries
Prime Minister Modi is being honoured for his significant contributions to Dominica and the region. In February 2021, India sent 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Dominica, helping the country support its Caribbean neighbors.
The award also recognizes India’s assistance in healthcare, education, and IT under his leadership, as well as his global efforts to promote climate resilience and sustainable development.
