About Jaguars

The name “Jaguar” originates from the Tupi and Guarani languages of South America from the word yaguar, which means “true, fierce beast and he who kills in one leap".

They represent a symbol of power for many Latin American cultures that represent the power of nature, and they help in the protection of the rainforest.

Jaguars are South America’s largest big cat and the third-largest cat in the world. They mainly found in the Central and South American regions.

Appearance

The Jaguar appears short, but it is a very strong and heavy predator among the 7 big cat species. Their fur is usually tan or orange with black spots on their body, which are called "rosettes"; these spots are shaped like roses.

Habitat & Range

Usually, Jaguars are adaptable predators, and they are primarily associated with dense forests and reliable sources of water. Their habitat includes tropical rainforests; seasonal wetland areas like Pantanal grasslands; and even dry shrub countries or desert areas.

Historically, Jaguars were seen from the southwestern United States to Central Argentina. But, currently they have been eliminated from approximately 49% of their historical range, and in the El Salvador and Uruguay regions, they are extinct.

Facts about Jaguars

  • The Jaguar is adept at tree climbing, and he is content to live as a solitary and terrestrial animal.

  • Despite so many similarities between the jaguar and leopard, they are different from each other. As the main difference between their physical appearance is from their rosettes (circular marking)

    • Jaguars have black dots in the middle of their rosettes, and they have a larger, rounded head and short legs.

    • But leopards don’t have any black dots in the middle of their rosettes.
