Who is the Founder of Canva?

Canva didn't start out as a one-man show. It was started by three people: Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams.

The journey of Canva starts with Melanie Perkins, who was 19 years old and studying at the University of Western Australia. She taught graphic designing on the side. She found that most people found it really hard and confusing to use complex softwares. Why can't design be simple for everyone? She thought to herself. This one question changed everything.

In 2007, Melanie and her husband Cliff Obrecht began a small company, Fusion Books. It was an online resource for school students to easily create their own yearbooks. This little idea did well and Fusion Books became the biggest yearbook publisher in Australia. But Melanie had bigger dreams.

How Was Canva Born?

In 2011, Melanie and Cliff wanted to take their idea to the whole world. Not only yearbooks, but a place where people could create anything. Posters, business cards, social media posts, presentations, everything, without needing the knowledge of design.

For the technical aspects, they recruited Cameron Adams, a former Google engineer, as the third co-founder. In January 2013, they officially released Canva.

Canva is a private company, which means it's not traded on a stock exchange, such as Tata Motors or Infosys. It is still owned by three co-founders which are Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams. The company also has other shareholders.

Who is the CEO of Canva?

Melanie Perkins is the CEO of Canva and still to this day continues to lead the company. One of the world's youngest female self-made billionaires, she is estimated to have a net worth of approximately $7.6 billion as per Forbes. Even with all her accomplishments she and Cliff Obrecht have committed to giving the majority of their fortune to charity. 

The Forbes mentions: “The couple has pledged to transfer more than 80% of their stake to the Canva Foundation for charitable causes.”

The Canva story is one about a young woman who saw a complex problem and thought she could make it easier. She created a company that assists millions of people to design their ideas each and every day.
