Fake News about Free Laptop Scheme Busted

Fake News on Free Laptop Scheme: With Schools and Colleges being closed in several states due to the 3rd wave of COVID-19, majority of educational institutions have moved back to online learning mode. As students and teachers settle back in virtual classrooms for next few week, a new fake news about ‘Free Laptop Scheme’ has gone viral on social media platforms. A message with a fake screenshot of a tweet by Education Ministry’s official handle has gone viral among students claiming that Government has launched a new scheme to distribute free laptops among students to assist online learning. However, PIB’s Fact Check Team has busted this fake news, confirming that no such scheme has been launched by the government.

 

PIB Fact Check busts Fake Free Laptop Scheme

As reported earlier, several students and parents had received the fake message with screenshot of Education Ministry confirming distribution of free laptops among students for online learning. The message being circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms claimed that “Central government is giving free laptops to families to help support virtual learning has been making rounds on social media platforms.” However, no such scheme has been announced by the Central Government and PIB Fact Check team has also said the same in a message from its official account.

PIB Team urges Students Not to Share Personal Details on Unverified Websites

The message from PIB fact check team reads “A message along with a link is claiming that @EduMinOfIndia will provide free laptops to all people to support virtual learning amid the #COVID19 outbreak.” This Claim is FAKE”. Furthermore, the PIB team urges people not to share any such unverified messages among students and parents to avoid creating confusion among them. In addition to this, the team also advises students to never give out any personal information on such websites, unless the information is verified by credible sources.
