Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the largest Open University in the country has previously made education to jail inmates possible, has now made it possible for the commercial sex workers to come under their study programmes.
The Nagpur Regional Centre of IGNOU, with all its positive efforts to provide education of the marginalized has added another feather in their cap and collaborated with the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and would provide educational opportunities to Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) of ‘Ganga Jamuna’ area in Nagpur.
The Indian Red Cross is working for long with these sex workers and had provided them counseling on health related issues. This time around they have joined hands with the premiere distance education body in the country, IGNOU to first conduct an awareness camp for the CSWs on the eve of Teachers’ Day last year.
For the first session that is beginning in the January 2015, nine candidates have already taken admission in the Bachelors Preparatory Program (BPP) of IGNOU in September. BPP is a non-formal stream, which is an entry to graduation. Anyone who is 18 can take admission to this program, by proving their age. These women have produced their Aadhar Cards as proof of age, and took admission in the programme.
