SECTION A

1. (A): Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (1 × 10 = 10)

Pollution is one of the most serious problems that the whole world is facing today. It is the result of human actions that harm the natural environment. Pollution comes in many forms, including air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. Each of these types affects not only the environment but also the health of all living beings.

Air pollution is caused by harmful gases and smoke released into the atmosphere, mainly from vehicles, factories and the burning of fossil fuels. It can lead to respiratory problems and contributes to global warming. Water pollution occurs when waste materials, chemicals and plastic are dumped into rivers, lakes, and oceans. This affects aquatic life and makes the water unsafe for drinking and daily use.

Soil pollution results from the excessive use of pesticides and the improper disposal of waste. It reduces the fertility of the soil and affects plant growth. Noise pollution, caused by loud sounds from traffic, construction and industries, can lead to stress, hearing loss and sleep disorders.

Human activities like deforestation, industrialization and overuse of natural resources have increased pollution levels. If not controlled, pollution can lead to severe damage to the planet. However, there are solutions. Planting more trees, using public transport, recycling waste and reducing plastic use are some of the steps we can take to reduce pollution.

Everyone must take responsibility for protecting the environment. Small actions by individuals can lead to big changes when practised collectively. By being more aware and careful in our daily lives, we can make a positive impact and create a cleaner, healthier world for future generations.

1. (B) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. (1 × 6 = 6)

In a reversal of the norm elsewhere, in India, policymakers and economists have become optimists while bosses do the worrying. The country’s Central Bank has predicted that India’s economy is likely to grow at a double-digit rate during the next 20-30 years. India has the capability with its vast labour and lauded entrepreneurial spirit. But the private sector, which is supposed to do the heavy lifting that turns India from the tenth largest economy to the third largest by 2030, has become fed up. Business people often crib about India’s problems but their irritation this time has a nervous edge. In the first quarter of 2011, the GDP grew at an annual rate of 7.8 percent; in 2015-17 it managed 6-7 percent. The economy may be slowing naturally as the low interest rates and public spending that got India through the global crisis have been belatedly withdrawn. At the same time, the surge in inflation caused by exorbitant food prices has spread more widely, casting doubt over whether India can grow at 8-10 percent in the medium term without overheating.

i. What rate of growth does the central Bank predict for the Indian economy for the next 20 -30 years?

(a) eight percent

(b) seven percent

(c) double digit

(d) five percent

ii. Who is supposed to do the heavy lifting to turn India into the third largest economy?

(a) government agencies

(b) private sector

(c) public sector

(d) property owners

iii. What is India’s capability to grow based on?

iv. What is casting doubts over India’s growth rate?

v. Fill in the blank with a suitable word from the passage.

He suffered from a ______breakdown.

vi. Match the words under column ‘A’ with their meaning under ‘B’.

  • Functional Grammar: Grammar and Translation now account for substantial marks, with specific focus on "Voice," "Narration," and "Transformation of Sentences."

  • Objective Questions: 10 marks in the literature section are purely objective (MCQs/One-word), making thorough reading of chapters like "Hassan's Attendance Problem" and "The March King" essential.
