Andhra Pradesh Government on 12 August 2014 decided to make Vijayawada its ad hoc capital. Vijayawada will be an ad hoc capital until the needed infrastructure and other projects for the new capital are completed.

The decision to make Vijayawada as ad hoc capital was taken at a meeting of Advisory Committee on Capital City headed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

At the meeting of Advisory Committee, CM Naidu asked the Advisory Committee to see that Vijayawada houses key administrative offices during the interregnum and asked the committee to chalk out a master plan for a full-fledged city so as to make it an important tourist destination.

Furthermore, he asked the committee members to make the new capital unique and slum free and ensure that at least 60 percent of the new capital’s area is composed of flora and fauna.

He also advised the Advisory Committee on Capital City to visit cities like Chandigarh, New Raipur, Navi Mumbai and Gandhinagar and also asked to take cues from global cities like Brasilia, Singapore, Putrajaya (Malaysia) in building A.P.’s capital city.

At the meeting, a delegation from McKinsey made a presentation titled Vision for A.P. Capital.
