Russia to soon register second COVID-19 vaccine:
• Russia will soon register a second COVID-19 vaccine, informed Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 23, 2020.
• The Russian President made the announcement while speaking to Russian Upper House lawmakers.
• The national consumer health watchdog of Russia stated on September 22 that another vaccine, developed by the Vector research centre, which is dubbed as EpiVacCorona would be registered by October 15.
EAM Dr S Jaishankar participates in Special Foreign Ministers Meeting of CICA
• External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar participated in the Special Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the CICA on September 24, 2020. The CICA is the Conference on Interaction & Confidence Building Measures in Asia.
• While speaking at the special meeting, the External Affairs Minister underlined India’s commitment to a pluralistic cooperative security order in Asia through CICA.
• He also highlighted India’s contributions to the global fight against COVID-19 and India's openness to do more, including with respect to vaccines. He also spoke about India-central Asia cooperation and the Indo-Pacific Ocean’s Initiative and called for greater collective efforts to counter terrorism and its sponsors.
• Jaishankar also reaffirmed India’s support for Afghan peace process that respects its national sovereignty and territorial integrity and preserves its democratic progress.
Maharashtra’s 'My Family My Responsibility' campaign covers over 2.24 crore people
• The Maharashtra state government had launched ‘My Family My Responsibility' campaign on September 15 to reach out to every family residing in Mumbai.
• Under the campaign, around 55,268 teams were formed to reach out to each household.
• Till now, over 2.24 crore people have been checked already under the campaign, which includes around 69.94 lakh households. Around 4,517 people were tested positive for COVID-19+ out of the 33,733 suspected cases under the campaign.
• The ‘My Family My Responsibility’ campaign entails door-to-door survey for tracing and treating patients, identifying people with co-morbidities, raising awareness and educating the citizens on safety measures to break the transmission of the virus.
Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine enters last stage trials in US
• Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine entered Phase 3 trials in the United States on September 23, 2020. This is the fourth COVID vaccine candidate to enter last stage of trials in the US, after Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.
• Pfizer and Moderna had began their phase 3 trials in late July, while AstraZeneca began its phase 3 trials this month. But currently, AstraZeneca’s trials are paused after a participant fell ill in the United Kingdom.
• The preliminary results of the last stage trials of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine candidate is not expected before at least two months.
UN, Britain to co-host Global Climate Summit in December
• United Nations and Britain will co-host a global climate summit on December 12, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement.
• The event will be co-hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to rally much greater climate action and ambition.
• The summit will see involvement of many government, leaders, private sector and civil society to present more ambitious and high-quality climate plans.
• The climate summit is expected to boost momentum ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26) to be held in Glasgow in November 2021.
