Answers with Explanation

1. (d) Britain

Qatar on 10 December 2017 signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to buy 24 Typhoon fighters from Britain. The $8-billion deal was signed in Doha by Qatar’s Defence Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah and his visiting British counterpart, Gavin Williamson. The deal comes through at a time when the region is facing one of its worst political crisis.  

2. (b) New Delhi

The ASEAN India Connectivity Summit (AICS) began in New Delhi on 11 December 2017. The theme of the two-day Summit is Powering Digital and Physical Linkages for Asia in the 21st Century. The AICS aims at accelerating existing connectivity prospects, identifying issues of concern, evolving suitable policy recommendations and developing strategies to enhance economic, industrial and trade relations between ASEAN and India.

3. (b) Australia

Australia on 10 December 2017 defeated Rio Olympics champions Argentina 2-1 in the final of the Hockey World League Final to win the gold medal. Both the nations were tied at 1-1 after three-quarters of the match. Australia’s Blake Govers scored the winning goal with just three minutes left in the game.

4. (d) Five

India won five medals at the 10th Asian Airgun Shooting Championships, which was held in Japan. Overall, India had seven individual finalists across the three events that were held on 8 December 2017. This will be the same range where the shooting competitions for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be hosted.

5. (c) Raffaele Bergamasco


Italian coach Raffaele Bergamasco has been appointed as the Performance Director for women's boxing. Bergamasco was the man behind India's best ever medal haul at the recently-concluded AIBA Women's Youth Boxing Championship.

6. (d) Meghalaya

The Union Government has sanctioned Rs. 75 crore for setting up a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant in Meghalaya, the only state in the region that has no bottling plant. The a deal for the same was signed between the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the state government in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in Shillong.

7. (b) Third

India on 10 December 2017 beat Germany to reclaim the bronze medal at the Hockey World League (HWL) Final tournament. Both the nations were tied at 1-1 until Harmanpreet Singh gave India the 2-1 lead in the 54th minute, which remained the difference between the two teams and helped seal the third place for India.

8. (c) Assam


The state government of Assam has planned to build Kamakhya as the cleanest pilgrimage site in the country. Inaugurating the Kamakhya Development Project at the temple premises atop Nilachal hill in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said a clean environment will make a positive impression among devotees who come to Kamakhya every year in large numbers.

9. (a) Uttarakhand

The state government of Uttarakhand has taken a new initiative for energy conservation. The state government has made it compulsory for all Government offices to install LED bulbs. This will reduce the consumption of electricity in offices and civic areas.

10. (c) Assam

In Assam, 40 thousand direct employments has been generated following the adoption of Ease of Doing Business measures. Assam’s Industry and Commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has stated that several investors across the globe are showing keen interest to invest in Assam. He said that the first ever Global Investors Summit, to be held in February next year, will immensely help the state.

11. (a) TB

The Union government has launched a door-to-door campaign for 15-days in the country for early diagnosis, detection and treatment of tuberculosis to eliminate the disease. The health ministry has initiated this campaign along the lines of its anti-polio drive, which fetched very good result for India and successfully eliminated this disease from the country.

12. (d) Mt Hope

According to the new discovery, Mt Hope is the tallest mountain in the British Antarctic Territory (BAT). Its height is measured at 3,239 meters above sea level. Earlier, maps showed Mt Jackson with the height 3,184 meters as the tallest mountain in the territory according to researchers at British Antarctic Survey (BAS).
