Delhi state cabinet approved a draft bill that will make marriage registration manadatory for all newly married couples in the capital. The Delhi Registration of Marriage Bill 2007 also has a provision for a penalty of 1000 rupees on those who do not register their marriage within 60 days. The bill will be sent to the Union home ministry for approval. Once approved by the ministry, the Bill will be tabled in the Delhi Assembly.
The state cabinet made this move as a follow-up to a Supreme Court direction to the Union and state governments on marriage registration. The Court had observed in 2006 that how women deserted by their husbands could not prove that the marriage had been solemnized due to lack of any official document.
