India will soon launch its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant milestone in the country's railway industry. The railway is expected to start running on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana by March 31, 2025. This innovative project is in line with India's goals of adopting cleaner energy sources, cutting carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable mobility.

Hydrogen trains represent the future of environmentally friendly modes of transportation, which runs on hydrogen fuel cells. The only products of these cells are heat and water. These trains are a cleaner option for passenger transport because they drastically reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution in comparison to traditional diesel trains.

India Hydrogen Train Key Features

With a number of remarkable features, the future hydrogen-powered train will rank among India's most cutting-edge trains.

  • Maximum speed: To ensure efficient travel, the train can reach a maximum speed of 110 km/h.
  • Passenger capacity: It can hold 2,638 people, making it suitable for a large number of commuters.
  • Engine power: The train will have a 1,200 horsepower engine, making it the world's largest hydrogen-powered train.

India Hydrogen Train Route

The train will travel a considerable distance with several stops to accommodate commuters on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Haryana was selected as the launch state because of its strong railroad network and rising demand for environmentally friendly transportation options.

Benefits of Hydrogen Train

India's railway network benefits greatly from the installation of hydrogen-powered trains, including

Zero carbon emissions: These trains only release water vapor, which lowers pollution levels compared to diesel locomotives.

Energy efficiency: Compared to conventional fuels, hydrogen fuel cells offer a more energy-efficient option.

Long-term cost-effectiveness: Long-term fuel savings and environmental advantages make it a financially feasible choice, despite the potential high initial costs.

Noise reduction: Passenger comfort is improved by hydrogen trains' quieter operation.

Indian Railway’s Goal of Net Zero Emission

The Modi government has been actively promoting energy-efficient and sustainable transportation through its "Hydrogen for Railways" initiative. This project is part of a bigger plan to make Indian Railways completely free of carbon emissions by 2030.

With the successful deployment of hydrogen-powered trains, India will be able to follow in the footsteps of nations that have previously embraced hydrogen rail technology, such as China, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

With this historic move, Indian Railways will revolutionize passenger transport and support international efforts to tackle climate change.
