India’s CAG appointed as External Auditor of OPCW, what is OPCW?

India received overwhelming support to be selected as the External Auditor of the OPCW during the election process that was conducted at the OPCW Conference.

India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), G C Murmu, on April 21, 2021, got appointed as External Auditor of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) at The Hague for a three-term year starting 2021.

As per an official statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, “India’s election was a recognition of its standing among the international community.”

India received overwhelming support to be selected as the External Auditor of the OPCW during the election process that was conducted at the OPCW Conference to make the appointment, the MEA statement mentioned.

India has also been elected as the member state of the Executive Council of the OPCW in the Asia regional group for another two-year term.

About G C Murmu, India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)

•G C Murmu, IAS, 1985-batch of the Gujarat cadre was appointed as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on August 08, 2020.

•Murmu replaced Rajiv Mehrishi, IAS, a 1978-batch officer of the Rajasthan cadre.

•Murmu was for the first and former Lt. Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. He had sworn in on October 31, 2019.

•He was also Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi during his reign as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He is also a trusted aide of PM Narendra Modi.

•He has also been the External Auditor of International Maritime Organization, UN World Tourism Organization, World Intellectual Property Organization, International Organization for Migration, International Atomic Energy Agency, and World Food Programme.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)

•The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), with its 193 member states, is an international organization that works to achieve the vision of a world free of chemical weapons.

•It came into being on April 29, 1997. It is based in The Hague, Netherlands.

•It is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention that aims to eliminate and destroy chemical weapons by prohibiting any development, acquisition, stockpiling, production, or use of chemical weapons.

•India is a member state of the Executive Council of the OPCW in the Asia region. The country had signed the treat on January 14, 1993.
