The Government of India has finally announced name of the new Army Chief of India. Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi will take over as the new Chief of Staff of the Army Staff, from June 30, 2024. Gen. The procedure of the duty transfer between General Manoj C. Pande Lt. Gen Dwivedi will take place in the afternoon of the same day.
Lt Gen Dwivedi has a great deal of experience conducting operations near Pakistani and Chinese borders. Lt Gen Dwivedi was appointed by the government in accordance with the seniority system. "The government has appointed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff with effect from the afternoon of June 30," said the Ministry of Defence during the announcement.
Who is Lt. Gen Upendra Dwivedi?
Born on July 1, 1964, Lt Gen. Upendra Dwivedi enlisted in the Indian Army on December 15, 1984, serving in the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, an infantry division. In his over forty-year career, he has held several important posts in the army. He has served as the commander of 9 Corps, the 26 Sector Assam Rifles, and the 18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles. He also held the position of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East).
Throughout his distinguished military service, Lieutenant General Dwivedi has received numerous honors and commendations. The Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and three General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Commendation Cards are just a few of the great honors that Lt Gen. Dwivedi has received till now.
Who Appoints Chief of Army Staff?
The Chief of Army Staff is usually appointed by the President of India. A President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Defense Forces of India. He/She is the one who handles all the appointments of the higher posts of the forces.
Mostly this appointment is done on the basis of seniority and age. But there have been instances when the president has appointed someone of low seniority amongst the army. One such instance arose during the appointment of General Bipin Rawat as the new army chief forgoing the seniority of Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi in the year 2016.
Tenure of the Army Chief
The Chief of Army Staff is appointed for a period of three years, or he or she may retire at sixty-two years old, whichever comes first. However the longest serving army chief of India is General Kodandera Subayya Thimayya. He held the postion for four years from 1957 to 1961.
