She is a prominent politician and previously served as the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 201612. Mehbooba Mufti Political Career
In 1996, Mehbooba emerged as a prominent figure in the state assembly elections, representing Bijbehara for the Indian National Congress, a party her father rejoined after leaving in 1987 due to dissatisfaction with its alliance with the National Conference. She later assumed the role of opposition leader, challenging Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah. Despite losing a parliamentary election in 1999, she secured the Pahalgam seat in 2002. Mehbooba became Jammu and Kashmir's first female Chief Minister in 2016 after her father's death. However, her tenure ended in 2018 due to a rift with the BJP over security concerns. Despite subsequent electoral losses, she remains a significant political figure.
