Prime Minister Modi on April 23, 2021, chaired a high-level meeting to review the prevailing COVID-19 situation amid the rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases in the country. He also interacted with the Chief Ministers of the high burden states on the Coronavirus situation.
PM Modi via Twitter informed that he will not be going to poll-bound West Bengal, as scheduled, because of the meeting. In the morning, PM Modi reviewed the COVID-19 related situation in an internal meeting.
In the afternoon, he will hold a meeting virtually with the leading oxygen manufacturers in India. Later in the evening, he will be addressing the voters of Kolkata, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Malda.

• PM Modi reviewed the COVID-19 situation with the ministers of 10 states- Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. The states account for nearly 75% of the new cases reported on a daily basis.
• During the meeting, PM Modi discussed the creation of more ICUs and COVID facilities in these high burden Coronavirus reporting states.
• He stressed the need for facilitating the movement of medical oxygen carriers for its easy accessibility.
• Prime Minister also stressed the need to scale up the testing and the creation of micro-containment zones for the better management of the pandemic.
• The meeting was also attended by the Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
During the meeting with Chief Ministers of the states facing medical oxygen crisis, the Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal pointed that there is a huge shortage of oxygen in the National Capital.

Meeting with Oxygen manufacturers of India:
After the Chief Ministers of states with the highest cases of Coronavirus, Prime Minister Modi's next meeting was with the oxygen manufacturers of the country. Amid the rising COVID-19 cases, India is seeing a shortage of medical oxygen in hospitals all over the country resulting in fatalities.

Meeting to review the oxygen supply:
On April 22, 2021, PM Modi had also chaired a high-level meeting to review the oxygen supply across the country and had discussed ways and means for boosting its availability.
During the meeting, he was also briefed on the efforts taken in the last few weeks to increase the supply of oxygen.
The demand for medical oxygen has drastically increased due to a surge in Coronavirus cases in the country in the second wave of the pandemic.
India records the highest spike in COVID-19 cases:
On April 22, 2021, more than 3 lakh new cases and over 2,000 deaths were reported in India, which is a record high since the pandemic broke in 2020.
According to the Union Health Ministry, as many as 3,14,835 new Coronavirus cases and 2,104 deaths have been reported.
