The Supreme Court on January 22, 2019 held that a child born out of a marriage between a Muslim man and his Hindu wife is entitled to claim a share in his father's property. The bench comprising Justice NV Ramana and Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar observed that the marriage of a Muslim man with Hindu woman or fire-worshipper is neither a valid (sahih) nor a void (batil) marriage, but is merely an irregular (fasid) marriage.
2. (a) Davos
The annual meet of World Economic Forum (WEF) began on January 22, 2019 in Davos, Switzerland. The World leaders from across the globe will attend the Forum at the Swiss Alps for five days to discuss the looming global economic crisis, global cooperation challenges, rapid climate change, increasing pollution levels, habitat loss, fourth wave of globalization, among others.
3. (d) Rio de Janeiro
UNESCO has named the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro as the World Capital of Architecture for 2020. Rio will be the first city to receive the title under a programme launched together by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects in November 2018.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development on January 24, 2019 celebrated the National Girl Child Day 2019 (NGCD) at Pravasi Bharti Kendra, Chankyapuri, New Delhi. The theme of National Girl Child Day 2019 was “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow”.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a ‘Shaurya Award’ for students in the name of 71 martyrs of state police force who laid down their lives in the line of duty while protecting society and maintaining law and order in the state.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli on January 22, 2019 became the first cricketer to win all the top three ICC individual awards including the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year, the ICC Men's Test Player of the Year and the ICC ODI Player of the Year for his performances in 2018.
7. (d) Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
Government instituted an annual award titled ‘Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar’. The award will be announced every year on 23 January on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
8. (a) Sea Vigil
The Indian Navy has commenced its largest-ever coastal defence exercise - ‘Sea Vigil’-off the Indian coast, ten years after the "26/11" attack. The exercise, a first of its kind, is being undertaken along the entire 7516.6 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India, involving all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories. It aims to comprehensively and holistically validate the efficacy of the measures taken since the '26/11' attack in Mumbai.
9. (a) Kalamsat
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched a students' satellite Kalamsat and an imaging satellite Microsat-R from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh on January 24, 2019, marking its first launch of the ISRO in 2019.
10. (c) Microsoft
Microsoft India launched a new e-commerce platform ‘re-weave.in’ for handloom weavers under the Project ReWeave, as part of its philanthropic initiatives. This e-commerce platform will help connect artisans to buyers directly and enable them to expand.
11. (a) C N R Rao
Eminent scientist and recipient of Bharat Ratna C N R Rao was chosen for the first Sheikh Saud International Prize for Materials Research by the Centre for Advanced Materials of the United Arab Emirates.
12. (c) JNPT
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s premiere container port, became the only Indian port to be listed amongst the top 30 container ports globally, as per the latest Lloyds Report. The port moved up five spots to be 28th on the list. The JNPT also launched its own app service to facilitate better tracking of consignment and ease the trade process for their EXIM partners.
