The World Bank on 1 June 2011 approved the loan of 1 billion dollars to support India’s efforts to clean up the River Ganga. The total cost of the National Ganga River Basin Project is 1.556 billion dollars.
The project will support the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) to manage the Ganga clean-up and conservation programme.
The project will also help the National Ganga River Basin Authority to establish a state-of-the-art Ganga Knowledge Centre to provide the knowledge relevant for the conservation of the Ganga. Moreover, the project will strengthen the Central and State Pollution Control Boards to monitor the pollution in the Ganga by providing staff training and modernizing the information systems.
