15 March- World Consumer Rights Day
World Consumer Rights Day was observed on 15 March 2013 for creating awareness in terms of consumer protection measures as well as consumer rights. The theme for 2013 World Consumer Rights Day was Consumer Justice Now.
This day was first observed on 15 March 1983. In 1962, the former US President John F. Kennedy, declared four basic consumer rights- right to choose, right to be heard, right to safety and right to be informed.
Consumer Protection Act, 1986
The Consumer Protection Act was enacted by the Parliament for the first time in 1986. It led to the establishment of consumer councils to settle consumer disputes and related matters.
Now, the Department of Consumer Affairs looks for the possibilities of producing tele-serials for empowering and educating consumers for their rights and responsibilities. Campaigns such as Jago Grahak Jago have been started in India with success in creation of consumer awareness.
