Richard Madley

Richard Madley, a seasoned British auctioneer, was the face of the IPL auctions from its inception in 2008 until 2018. With decades of experience in auctioneering, Madley brought a unique blend of professionalism and charisma to the IPL stage. 

His background as a fine art auctioneer equipped him with skills that translated seamlessly into the high-pressure, fast-paced environment of cricket auctions.  Known for his eloquence and calm demeanour, Madley managed the early years of IPL auctions, which were crucial in establishing the tournament's credibility. 

Under his guidance, the IPL saw some of the most expensive bids, including Yuvraj Singh in 2015, who fetched ₹16 crores from the Delhi Daredevils, making him the most expensive player at that time. 

Madley also presided over the auction where MS Dhoni became the first-ever IPL millionaire, sold to the Chennai Super Kings for $1.5 million in 2008. His tenure ended in 2018, but his contribution to shaping the IPL's auction culture remains significant and fondly remembered by enthusiasts.

Hugh Edmeades

Hugh Edmeades, another respected British auctioneer, took over as the IPL auctioneer in 2019, following Richard Madley's departure. 

With over three decades of experience in international auctions, specialising in fine art, classic cars, and real estate, Edmeades quickly adapted to the high-energy world of cricket. 

His warm personality, engaging style, and measured approach to bidding captivated audiences, helping him manage the sometimes heated atmosphere of IPL auctions with ease. 

Under his guidance, the IPL witnessed some of the highest bids in its history, including Pat Cummins in 2020, who was sold for ₹15.5 crores to the Kolkata Knight Riders, making him the most expensive overseas player at the time. 

The most notable bid under Edmeades was Sam Curran in 2023, who fetched a record-breaking ₹18.5 crore from the Punjab Kings. 

Despite facing a brief health scare during the 2022 auction, Edmeades returned to the stage, reinforcing his reputation as a reliable and engaging figure, expertly handling the excitement and unpredictability of the IPL auctions.
