1) Bhupendra Jogi meme

No one would have expected that a short interview with a man could turn into the most searched and hilarious meme on the internet in India. The Bhupendra Jogi meme traces its origins back to 2018. Yes, a five-year-old video was the most trending meme of 2023.

2) So Beautiful So Elegant meme

The internet remains unbeatable. It turned a quite eccentric sentence uttered during an Instagram live session by a local woman into the second-most searched meme in the country. Jasleen Kaur, who runs a boutique in Tilak Nagar, Delhi, selling ethnic suits, became a global sensation overnight. From Deepika Padukone to Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, even celebrities took part in the trend. You can watch the meme here:

 

3) Moye Moye meme

The Moye Moye meme has its origins in the song ‘Džanum’ sung by Serbian singer-songwriter Teya Dora in 2023. The song explores the theme of rejection and yearning for a loved one. However, the internet used the song and turned it for silly and twisted humour. You can see the original song here:

4) Aayein meme

One of the most hilarious ones on this list, the Aayein meme originated from a short interview of a student. Aditya Kumar, a school student from Bihar was asked about his favourite subject to which he replied, “aayein” (colloquial for “what?”). The interviewer repeated his question and this time Aditya answered “baigan” (Hindi for eggplant). Here is the video:

5) Aukat Dikha Di meme

The Aukat Dikha Di Meme originated from a short clip of a Tamil movie. In the film, when the main character arrives at the Parliament, he is greeted by another character who welcomes him. In response, the main character smiles and puts his hand on the other man’s shoulder, and slowly pushes him away. Here is the meme’s original video:

6) Ohio meme

Ohio, one of the 50 US states, became one of the most popular memes of the year. The “Only in Ohio” meme or “Can’t even in Ohio” meme digs fun at the state, featuring absurd or bizarre situations that supposedly only happen there.

7) The Boys meme

The Boys is a dark humour and action series set in a world where there are superheroes who use their powers in wicked ways. The meme is coupled with the song 'Bones' by Imagine Dragons. Here is an example of this:

8) Elvish Bhai meme

Elvish Yadav is an Indian YouTuber who won the 2023 season of the Indian television reality show “Bigg Boss.” His popularity soared after his win and an interview with one of his fans, resulted in the birth of this meme. 

9) The Waffle House New Host meme

YouTuber Johnny RaZer made the Waffle House host meme. He asked his fans to comment “The Waffle House has found a new host” on random videos till January 31st. 

10) Smurf Cat meme

This meme shows a creature who is hybrid of a smurf and a cat, wearing a hat and using Alan Walker’s song “Spectre.”
