Where is the Panama Canal?

The world is a vast network of waterways, and features legendary canals like the Suez Canal in Egypt, the ancient Grand Canal of China, and various others. Although each of these routes is essential to the commerce and history of the region, the Panama Canal is a "magic door" between the two largest oceans in the world.

Do you know that the Panama Canal stands as one of the most significant engineering achievements in human history? In this article, learn how it revolutionises global trade by connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

What is the Panama Canal?

The canal operates as a "water elevator". Ships enter a series of massive locks that use gravity to fill and empty chambers with fresh water.

This process raises ships 26 metres (85 feet) above sea level to cross the Continental Divide via the Culebra Cut (Gaillard Cut) before lowering them back to sea level on the opposite side.

What is the Panama Canal’s Length?

The Panama Canal is an 80-kilometre (50-mile) artificial waterway. It cuts through the Isthmus of Panama, which is the narrow land bridge linking North and South America.

By providing this vital shortcut, it allows vessels to bypass the hazardous 8,000-nautical-mile journey around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.

How was the Panama Canal Made?

The quest to build the canal was a saga of technical ambition and immense human sacrifice.

1. The French Attempt

It was led by Ferdinand de Lesseps from 1881 to 1889. The French sought to build a sea-level canal. However, they were defeated by rugged terrain and tropical diseases like yellow fever and malaria, which claimed an estimated 22,000 lives.

2. The American Success

The United States took over the project after purchasing French assets for $40 million between 1904 and 1914. American engineers abandoned the sea-level plan for a lock-and-lake system. This involved damming the Chagres River to create Gatun Lake, which was then the largest man-made lake in the world.

3. Sanitation Breakthrough

Then, success was possible after the Chief Sanitary Officer, William Crawford Gorgas, spearheaded a massive effort to eradicate disease-carrying mosquitoes. It significantly reduced the death rate during the U.S. era (5,609 recorded deaths).

Why is the Panama Canal So Significant?

Today, the canal is an essential economic engine managed by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). It handles approximately 3% to 5% of all world maritime trade.

  • Economic Impact: It facilitates the movement of goods between 1,920 ports across 170 countries.

  • The 2016 Expansion: A $5.25 billion project added a third set of locks to accommodate Neopanamax vessels. These are giant ships that carry up to 14,000 containers (TEUs), which is nearly triple the capacity of older ships.

  • Environmental Stewardship: The canal now focuses on water security, as Gatun Lake provides drinking water for half of Panama's population while powering the locks.

To conclude, the Panama Canal remains a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring power of international cooperation.

It is more than just a shortcut between two oceans, as it continues to be the vital heartbeat of maritime trade, and adapts to the challenges of the 21st century to keep the world connected.
