The Indian Institute of Science, IISc, Bengaluru, has joined with Amar Chitra Katha to produce a unique comic book effort, which will be launched on March 7, 2026, during the institute's 'Open Day'. The comic follows IISc's century-long history, from its conception by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata to its role in nation-building, with the goal of inspiring future generations via the stories of Indian scientific pioneers.

The Indian Institute of Science, IISc, Bengaluru, has launched a unique initiative to bring its century-long legacy to life through a comic book. Developed in partnership with the iconic storytelling brand Amar Chitra Katha, the illustrious edition aims to bridge the gap between the complex institutional history and the younger generations. The comic was officially launched on March 7, 2026, during the institute's popular ‘Open Day’

A Narrative of Vision and Nation-Building 

The newly launched comic book traces the remarkable journey of IISc from its conceptualisation by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata during the British colonial era. The comic also highlights the important roles played by the key figures, including the support of the Mysore royal family, which was instrumental in establishing the institute in 1911. By using the accessible and vivid medium of comics, the project seeks to inspire young readers with stories of pioneers who used science as a tool for self-reliance and national progress.

The development of this publication was a meticulous two-and-a-half-year process involving historians, archivists, and faculty members to ensure historical accuracy. This comic book will be available in English, Hindi, and Kannada, with a narrative that will emphasise IISc’s contributions to various fields of research and its impact on society.
