Kerala School and College Reopening: Finally, the decision for which lakhs of students across the state of Kerala were waiting for has been announced. As per the latest update, the Kerala State Government has given in-principal permission for reopening of Schools and Colleges in the state with strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines. The state government has approved phase-wise reopening plan for educational institutions in the state but also directed all the authorities to ensure complete safety, health and well-being of students and teachers.

Colleges Reopen on 4th October, Schools on 1st November

The decision to allow reopening of schools and colleges was taken by the state government after performing a thorough review of the prevailing COVID-19 situation. As per the decision, Colleges will reopen across the state from 4th October 2021 onwards whereas schools will reopen in the second phase i.e. from 1st November 2021. The reopening of colleges will start with brining Final Semester Undergraduate and Postgraduate, UG, PG students on campus first. On the other hand, for schools, for the first phase, physical classes will resume only for Class 9 to 12 students.

100% Capacity for PG, 50% for UG allowed

The official order passed by Higher Education Department Joint Secretary Sajukumar said that during the initial phase, physical classes for postgraduate level students will be allowed at 100% capacity. On the other hand, for undergraduate courses, only 50% capacity of the total classroom will be allowed. In addition to this, the order also puts emphasis on on practical classes for science subjects and rest of the theory subjects can continue to be taught online. 

As part of the college reopening guidelines, the Higher Education Department of the State has called for sanitization of all classrooms, libraries and laboratories. Among other guidelines, the institutes also have to enusre that there are sufficient masks and handwash facilities available. Moreover, vaccination drives must be arranged for students and staff on priority.
