5 worst career mistakes you must avoid

It is often seen that in order to, earn success and fame in the initial stages of the career, employees resort to take shortcuts that are deadly and can cost them their job as well. Such mistakes at the initial stage of the career can hamper your growth and leave a mark that will be hard to forego.

For gaining success and lead a prosperous career, you should not get indulged in dirty politics that will over-power your talents in the name of flatterer. You must play an active role when the need arise and contribute your true efforts to gain name and fame. But, if you are hell bent on choosing the other way round then be prepared for an uninformed firing from the organisation that will further lead you nowhere.

So, here is a list of some career mistakes which one must avoid as they are deadly enough to dampen your career. Here are 5 worst ones:

Job Hopping

Mindlessly switching jobs just for the sake of money gives a bad impression of your personality. The panel of recruiters is smart enough to judge your intentions for the job change and they can very well highlight this fact from the trend with which you have changed your previous jobs.

We do not say that you are wrong in your choice of choosing money as the reason for job change, but there are other factors also that define one’s personality. Hence, prospective employers often avoid such candidates, who are too frequent in changing their job because it reflects that you are low on the scale of job commitment, least reliable, lack sincerity, and are self-centered and money minded.

Personal Touch with your boss

Mainiting relations with your peers and seniors are always welcomed in the organisation as it is considered as your second home. But on the flipside, getting too personal and friendly with your boss though may not get you the desired benefits that you are looking forward too. It is advisable to maintain a healthy distance from the superiors and not to get too involved in lieu of getting personal favours.

In fact, while getting way too personal with your boss, he/she might take you for granted, or may expect exceptionally high performance from you. This situation will surely land you in troubles.

Getting Obsolete

This is one fear and aspect which can cause you a great fortune. Even if you have got the best job in the whole world, do not life in self-complacency considering that your learner streak is of no use now. Be a continuous learner and strive to learn more in your domain.

It is at the time of digitization that people working in the Banking Industry were forced to take up voluntary retirement because they did not want to learn computerization. Those who learnt to become friendly with the machine are still employed. In today’s century when technology is advancing at super-sonic speed, it's extremely important to stay on top of your game and not allow your skills to become outdated.

Whenever possible enrol in programmes that let you stay abreast of the latest developments. Get involved in professional seminars and workshops from where you can acquire skills and knowledge about the latest trends in your respective industry.

Job hunting in the Current Organisation

Job hunting is one personal aspect which you must avoid engaging in during the company hours. Once you are caught while scanning for the jobs on the job portals, you might land up in the waters. The company personnel have access to all the data and have the authority to scan your online history because at work it is never private. If your manager walks in with a view of your screen (while you are busy surfing for the best possible jobs in for your career growth) it will cause problems for you.

The company might start searching for your replacement and you might be fired on no grounds. It is advisable to avoid searching for the job on the company’s time and do not let yourself down in the eyes of your peers and managers. After all this behaviour is considered as unprofessional!

Quitting Job due to low self-esteem

There might arise a situation when you will find yourself in the low-spirits. This might be due your inefficiency to achieve the work targets, issues at personal front, work-life imbalance or any other probable reason. But if you stop believing in your talents then how do you expect your boss, colleagues, and clients to believe in you?

In this care, do not feel dejected or down in the mouth, rather, put efforts to build up your confidence. Stay optimistic and remind yourself about your strengths that can save your job.
