Few Sample Question from this Chapter are given below:

Q. Reflecting on the story, what do you feel about Evans' having the last laugh?

Ans. The prison authorities are no way ready to take any chances with Evans, till the end of the story. Evans, on the other hand, is leaving no stone unturned to make a fool out of them. He smartly devises and executes every plan of his escape. While taking the measured steps the authorities do not even hesitate to check the antecedents of the German teacher at first. Then they take away anything which could be a potential weapon for Evans including his nail-scissors, nail file and shaving accessories. But he manages to fool them once again. He tries to misguide the officials by leaving fake clues. Even when the Governor thinks that he has nabbed Evans in the hotel room, Evans is secretly weaving a greater conspiracy to carve out another path of escape. The prison officer and the van used by the Governor for transferring Evans back to the prison are forged. The Governor looks very happy for having traced Evans by using his intelligence and knowledge of German. However, Evans plans one step ahead of the Governer and manages to escape right under his nose. With his successful escape, Evans is definitely having a well earned last laugh.

Q. When Stephens comes back to the cell he jumps to a conclusion and the whole machinery blindly goes by his assumption without even checking the identity of the injured 'Mcleery. Does this show how hasty conjectures can prevent one from seeing the obvious? How is the criminal able to predict such negligence?

Ans. The story proves the fact that hasty conjectures can prevent one from seeing the obvious because they affect our ability and prevent us from thinking logically. In the story, Evans is a smart and insightful criminal who can easily study the behavior patterns of the officers in the prison. Stephen is a newly recruited prison officer. He is so overwhelmed to see the injured Mcleery in the cell that he does not even think of checking his reality. Infact, nobody questions that how there could be two persons; one in the cell and the other who has been escorted by Stephens. Evans’ friends capitalize the situation by posing as the Governor on the phone and directing Stephens to escort the person out of the prison, after the exam is over. Thus the Governor and his officers, actually lead Evans out of the prison. Hence Evans is a perfect plotter and a manipulator who has monitored the behaviour of the prison officers for a long time and rightly predicted their moves.
