GATE Syllabus 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee has released the GATE Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2025 for a total of 30 test papers on its official website. Aspirants can access the syllabus in PDF format for all the subjects from the download links shared below. They must carefully check the syllabus to identify topics that are relevant from the exam point of view. According to the official notification, the GATE exam syllabus is divided into three sections General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and subject-specific. Similarly, candidates must also check the GATE Exam Pattern 2025 and the best strategy to perform well in the exam. 

GATE Syllabus 2025

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level exam conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee). This exam is conducted to shortlist eligible candidates for admission to the master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture and doctoral programs in relevant branches of Arts and Science, in the institutions supported by the MoE and other Government agencies. 

The GATE 2025 exam will be conducted on February 1, 2, 15, and 16, 2025. As the exam date is around the corner, candidates must keep the GATE Syllabus 2025 handy and speed up their preparation accordingly. GATE Exam Pattern 2025

Candidates must check the GATE Exam Pattern 2025 before commencing the preparation. As per the official notification, the GATE question paper will be conducted online and it comprises a total of 65 questions (10 questions for General Aptitude) for 100 marks. Marking scheme

Questions carry 1 mark and 2 marks

GATE Negative Marking

For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be a negative marking.

For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer.

Likewise, for 2-mark MCQ, the 2/3 mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer.

There is no negative marking for incorrect answer(s) to MSQ and NAT questions.

There is no partial marking for any question

The GATE Exam Syllabus is divided into three sections General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and subject-specific. General Aptitude is a common subject for all the test papers of the GATE 2025 exam. Candidates must check the GATE General Aptitude syllabus to differentiate between important and unimportant topics. The GATE Syllabus 2025 for General Aptitude is divided into various subjects such as Verbal Aptitude, Quantitative Aptitude, Analytical Aptitude, and Spatial Aptitude. GATE Syllabus 2025 for Engineering Mathematics

Engineering Mathematics is an important section of the GATE 2025 exam. It is a compulsory section for all the XE candidates. The syllabus of this section varies as per the test papers. Algebra of real matrices: Determinant, inverse and rank of a matrix; System of linear equations (conditions for unique solution, no solution and infinite number of solutions); Eigen values and eigen vectors of matrices; Properties of eigen values and eigen vectors of symmetric matrices, diagonalization of matrices; Cayley-Hamilton Theorem.

Section 2: Calculus

Functions of Single Variable: Limit, indeterminate forms and L'Hospital's rule; Continuity and differentiability; Mean value theorems; Maxima and minima; Taylor's theorem; Fundamental theorem and mean value theorem of integral calculus; Evaluation of definite and improper integrals; Applications of definite integrals to evaluate areas and volumes (rotation of a curve about an axis).

Functions of Two Variables: Limit, continuity and partial derivatives; Directional derivative; Total derivative; Maxima, minima and saddle points; Method of Lagrange multipliers; Double integrals and their applications.

Sequences and Series: Convergence of sequences and series; Tests of convergence of series with non-negative terms (ratio, root and integral tests); Power series; Taylor's series; FourierSeries of functions of period 2π.

Section 3: Vector Calculus

Gradient, divergence and curl; Line integrals and Green's theorem.

Section 4: Complex variables

Complex numbers, Argand plane and polar representation of complex numbers; De Moivre’s theorem; Analytic functions; Cauchy-Riemann equations.

Section 5: Ordinary Differential Equations

First-order equations (linear and nonlinear); Second order linear differential equations with constant coefficients; Cauchy-Euler equation; Second order linear differential equations with variable coefficients; Wronskian; Method of variation of parameters; Eigen value problem for second order equations with constant coefficients; Power series solutions for ordinary points.

Section 6: Partial Differential Equations

Classification of second order linear partial differential equations; Method of separation of variables: One dimensional heat equation and two dimensional Laplace equation

Section 7: Probability and Statistics

Axioms of probability; Conditional probability; Bayes' Theorem; Mean, variance and standard deviation of random variables; Binomial, Poisson and Normal distributions; Correlation and linear regression.

Section 8: Numerical Methods

Solution of systems of linear equations using LU decomposition, Gauss elimination method; Lagrange and Newton's interpolations; Solution of polynomial and transcendental equations by Newton-Raphson method; Numerical integration by trapezoidal rule and Simpson's rule; Numerical solutions of first-order differential equations by explicit Euler's method.
