The Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS), IIT Delhi is working on developing heat stress tolerance thresholds in an effort to formulate a better and efficient heat management plan across the country. This study is entirely based on a survey conducted across the country. Through this survey, CAS is collecting data about the people's perception of heat exposure along with direct measurement of stress conditions.

This whole study of heat stress tolerance thresholds is part of the IIT Delhi’s project "Heat Stress Index for India: projection for near future (HIIPROF)." This project will help in devising an efficient heat management plan across the country.

What is heat stress and how it is caused?

Heat stress occurs when our body on exposure to excess heat in the summer, is unable to cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature. In normal cases, our body cools itself by the process of sweating, but in case of heat stress sweating doesn’t help to shed off extra heat and the body temperature keeps on rising.

The increased exposure of human populations to heat stress is one of the likely consequences of global warming, and it has quite harmful effects on health of human beings.

The ultimate condition of heat stress is marked by the increased body temperature, lack of sweating, hot and dry skin, headache and unconsciousness. In severe conditions, it can cause heat cramps and heat stroke which may even lead to death.

For the One of the major components of this study is a population-based survey through which the Centre is collecting data about the people's perception of heat exposure along with direct measurement of stress condition and thermal imaging of human physiology under heat stress.

How to be a part of the survey conducted across nation on heat stress?

Any person residing in any part of the country can participate can participate in the survey conducted by the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS)by downloading an android app 'Heat Stress Survey' from Google Play Store. One can also submit his/her responses through the website www.heatstressindia.in. While submitting your responses, you must ensure that your mobile's GPS location is on so that your city/region can be located.

In the survey, people will be asked to answer a few general questions regarding the time in a day they felt maximum heat, nature of the day, type of activity they undertook on a particular day etc.

People can submit their responses everyday till July 15, 2019.

Prof. Sagnik Dey from CAS, IIT Delhi, who is also appointed as the project's Principal Investigator, while talking about the study said, "This project will help the Government to formulate appropriate heat management plan, especially when heat condition is expected to worsen in India under global warming."

The partner institutes in this project include IIT Kanpur, IISER Bhopal, RKMVU Kolkata, SRU Chennai, IIPH Gandhinagar.
