In a day and age where management institutes have mushroomed everywhere - each displaying a new set of accreditations to prospective students with each passing year - some institutes have remained in the background, silently honing the students’ management and leadership skills. Some of these institutes which have the highest ranks dedicate themselves to offering a strong educational foundation to the future managers.

One such institute, located in Pune, engaged in the tireless pursuit of educating aspiring mangers is, The Sri Balaji Society (SBS). A charitable trust established in the year 1998, SBS manages a Junior college, Law college, and management institutions under its brand umbrella. While each of these institutes is a brand in itself, the flagship brands of the society remain the four Management Institutes that operate at the sprawling 16 acre Tathwade Campus. Located on the Mumbai-Bangalore highway, the Society offers AICTE Approved 2 year residential PGDM programmes in Marketing, Finance, HR, Operations & Supply Chain Management, Systems, Business Analytics, Telecom t, and International Business.

The Founder & President of the Society, Dr. (Col) A Balasubramanian – an eminent educationist and a gifted writer has been instrumental in shaping Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies. A retired Army Personnel, he is the first Indian from Armed Forces in the history of India to be conferred the Honorary Rank of Colonel after retirement.   He is a firm believer in the values of Discipline, Determination, and Dedication which not only form the cornerstones of management education at Sri Balaji Society, but become the lifestyle of the PGDM students enrolled here.

A Quick Look into the Two Years of a Balajian at SBS

The two year residential PGDM programme at SBS has often been compared to the Navy SEAL Training of the US Marines owing to its demanding rigourousness. Just as the SEAL training, it is the fittest who get into SBS. After all it’s not easy to get through the demands of the progamme. Classroom based learning, supported by workshops, and guest lectures by eminent personalities, from the field of management, coupled with assignments and projects, keep the students engaged on a daily basis from 8 to 8 thereby giving them a taste of the stresses of corporate life ahead. Periodic and surprise tests keep the students on their toes who are ready with their arsenal of knowledge at any time. No wonder then that, the inclemency and hard work breeds a lifestyle imbued with discipline, determination, and dedication- virtues most needed by the students to survive and flourish at SBS!

All this rigour and strain is not without its rewards. The Society though believes in extracting the best out of its students, it also rewards the deserving ones. Balajians who maintain an attendance of more than 95% are awarded 5% attendance incentive marks in each subject and around 80%   of the students enrolled here are rewarded this way.

Cultural Activities at Campus

If all this gives you a feeling that Balajians are all about books and assignments you are totally wrong! This is not all that is to a Balajian’s life. The Society provides enough room for the overall development of the students. There are inter college competitive events that students are encouraged to participate in, which adds hues to the budding manager’s personality. One such cultural fest called the Aiyaswamy Cultural Festival is an event that every student at SBS looks forward to. Another event, Drishti is participated by not only students but also the Faculty members and is an epic event which witnesses aggressive yet enjoyable friendly competition. Apart from this, there is no festival which is not celebrated at the SBS Campus. The celebrations are not limited to the students alone but the entire society, which includes the Dean, the Directors, faculty, staff, and students, rejoice together. This is precisely the reason the Society is termed Mini-India by its Dean – Dr. (Col) A Balasubramanian.

From Theory to Practice

The graduates of SBS are not only text book ready but also industry ready. In the times when the corporates find their management recruits lacking in practical skills, SBS has ensured that their graduates join the workforce with not only text based knowledge but also practical training. The practical training of a Balajian begins much before one joins the campus. The marketing practical which involves selling subscriptions of the magazine Corporate Citizen, tests their sales acumen. Once in Campus, within the first 30 days, the student has to present a business of one’s choice to one’s batch mates (read 1000 odd audience!). Needless to say, this ensures that the student rids oneself of any glossophobia or stage fright. This is an important step towards making an effective communicator- a crucial aspect for a manager. The two years that follow witness numerous presentations and projects by the Balajian.

Industry Interface

The Society has a strong industry interface. During the two year PGDM programme, the students get plenty of opportunities to interact with industry leaders which acquaints them with the latest trends in the industry and the demands of the industry from young professionals. The recently concluded HR Conclave at the Society was one such event. The practical skills are further honed by the internships that a student manager – a term used to address the students at SBS, attends in the two years. Students have the liberty to pursue projects at a company of their choice, of course with an approval of the Society, or at a company assigned by the Institute.

The Placement

The scrupulous training thus imparted culminates with the student managers getting placed at some of the best corporate houses with lucrative salary packages in the Country.

Not only this, the Society boasts near 100% placements each year where no student leaves the campus without a job offer in his/her hand. Not only this, some of the students are placed right after completing the first year of their PGDM course subject to completion of the SAP Global certification which is a covered under the MoU between the Society and SAP India Pvt Ltd. This year, five of the students have been placed with Colgate-Palmolive after the successful completion of the first year of their PGDM programme and the SAP Global Certification.

No wonder then that SBS runs one of the rare few colleges that has been ranked #1 in ROI approach amongst private B-Schools in India by Career 360 (2016). Companies recruiting here include the likes of Amazon, Aditya Birla, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, Capgemini, Dell India, HCL, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, ITC, L&T Infotech, PayTm, Persistent, Reliance, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Wipro and many more!

However, in the age of consumerism and aggressive marketing the Society has decided to remain low key as it believes its work should speak louder than words. And it looks like the low key strategy has worked well for the society as it gets flooded with calls and applications each admission season and has to turn down 3 out of every 4 applicants.  To know more about the Society and its institutes click here.
